A Precious Gift

My aunt was cleaning out her cedar chest, and lucky me, she passed down some linens that my great-grandma, and my grandma had made for her when she was married.  I am so thrilled to have them!

My (dad's mom) Grandma Carlson embroidered a set of dish towels. They are very whimsical, and cute.  The complete set is here, with a cat and mouse on each towel.  Apparently, Wednesday must be sewing day!

My Great-Grandma Fast embroidered this set.  It is very monochromatic and pretty, each day is labeled with a chore; washing, ironing, cleaning, baking, and one for Sunday.

Included in the package was this apron, my grandma always used to bake and do her kitchen chores in an apron.  She passed away when I was in middle school, so these linens are extra special.

Look what I found in the apron pocket.  A hankie!

Thanks, Aunt Martha.  I love all my precious gifts from grandma, and  great-grandma.  I keep walking into my pantry just to peek at them; making my shelves so pretty!

  1. What wonderful treasures! One of my grandmoms sewed all the time and we have nothing that she made. Another grandmom sewed ocassionally, and I have a set of napkins that she embroidered that I take out for the holidays. You'll enjoy such wonderful memories with your keepsakes.

  2. I remember my grandmother making those dish towels too. I was in a craft store yesterday and they had the dish towels and everything you need in a bag to embroidered them (a kit to make 7 of them.) It reminded me of my grandmother who is now blind and 93 years old.

That is such a precious gift and they are very well done! I love the hankie too.

    Have a wonderful weekend,

    Robin~♥

  3. How wonderful to be given such treasures, family heirlooms that you can pass on. Do pop a note in the apron pocket (if you're not using it) with the details of who owned it. Lucey xx

  10. I too have a set of dishtowels made by Grandma Fast -- these have bluebirds on them and are also, oh, so pretty! As Libbie said, though, it's really hard to actually use them. Martha and I had the same idea, mine are safely packed away in my cedar chest. I wish I had room to display them.

  17. What a precious gift I bet you take them out to look at them all the time but never use them. I have a metal and leather cigarette case that was made by my grandfather during world war two for my great grandfather and I cherish it.
